A weekend with us

We are so lucky to be based in the South West and if we can fit any of these into our weekend it makes us even more ready for Monday!

Curators, Totnes

The best coffee and a lovely place to sit. We can't go in there without seeing someone we know!

The Curators, Totnes

The Beach Hut, South Milton.

One of our favourite beaches, sand, waves and rock pools then up to The Beach Hut for a coffee or lunch. The food is delicious and the view is spectacular.

Watergate Bay Hotel, Cornwall.

OK this isn’t part of our normal weekend but we’ve all stayed here and we love it. The food, the location, the style. If only it was part of a normal weekend!

The Glade, Dartington.

Step into a glade in the middle of a woods to find fairy lights, a fire pit, a bar and the best music. Definitely party venue of the year.

Paddleboarding on the Dart.

We all own paddleboards and love to take them onto the river Dart after work. The second you get on the water all the stresses melt away.

Caring for your Jewellery

Our jewellery is a combination of porcelain and high quality metals; primarily fine and sterling silver and gold plated silver.

Each piece is designed to last and weather time with you.

how to care for your one and eight gold jewellery

Here are a few tips to help keep your jewellery looking its best.

  • Clean your porcelain by gently wiping with a mild soap and luke warm water using a damp cloth.
  • Sterling silver and gold plated sterling silver can fade or dull but can be shined using a polishing cloth.
  • We recommend removing jewellery when sleeping, showering or swimming. And applying perfume or beauty products before wearing.
  • Contact with the air will tarnish your jewellery over time. Store in a closed container. Our unique bottles and tins are perfect for this!

We hope you enjoying wearing our jewellery as much as we loved creating it for you.

How your order gets to you

So this is what happens when you place an order!

As soon as we finalise a collection we start to make the porcelain. All the pieces are made in small batches, clay is dyed, rolled and cut before being fired in our kiln. Then they are sanded and some are glazed, painted with lustre or transfers and retired. It’s time consuming but we can’t get enough of the organic, tactile nature of porcelain that makes it a joy to work with. The porcelain is then incorporated with gold plated silver  and sterling silver and packaged. When someone orders with pick the piece from the shelf and pack it with love and care. Luckily for us the post office is down the road so we take it in turns to deliver the parcels every afternoon.

Tradeshows

We love a tradeshow!

I’m not saying they aren’t really hard work, we take ages preparing our stand and getting everything together. However they are such a great way to meet new stockists and catchup with our current ones. We love having a chat with our independent shop owners and finding out about the trends, styles and products they’ll be stocking next season. There are so many beautiful independent shops around the UK and as we are increasingly finding there are loads abroad too. It’s a real privilege to get to know these people and to do business with them. It’s always exciting to meet new shop owners too, come and talk to us if you see us at a trade show, we’d love to say hi.

Packaging

There’s a possibility we may be obsessed with packaging in our office.
It’s a bit embarrassing really. If one of us gets a present that’s packaged nicely we’ll bring it in and ‘show and tell’ it to the others. You’ll often find a collection of bottles, tins, boxes and pots at the side of each of our desk that we may use for inspiration in the future. We’re really proud that our packaging is reusable and our customers tell us they love it, we also think it makes our jewellery a perfect gift. Watch this space as we can’t wait to share new packaging ideas with you in the future!

Suzie

Suzie has a degree in Fashion and Textiles and worked as a fashion buyer in London for many years. She grew up in Totnes, moved back here and immediately undertook an intensive ceramics course. From the moment the course started Suzie was hooked on ceramics and couldn’t stop experimenting with clay. This is how One & Eight was born! She’s grown it from being just her in her spare room to employing 4 people and having a lovely studio and office in Totnes.
