6 things I do to manage my mental health as a small business owner

As a small business owner, I spend most of my days trying to do 20 things at once. 🙃⁠

Looking after your mental health is 𝘴𝘰 important, especially when you’re self-employed and wearing all the hats. If you’re in the same boat as me, I hope this helps.⁠

Here are 6 things I do to look after my mental wellbeing as a small biz owner.

I get moving

I might not be able to hit the slopes every time stress starts to creep in, but I can move my body in other ways! A run, walk or even a short yoga flow are all methods of movement I love to help slow down my busy brain.

Lots of lists.

I write lists

and lots of them! Lists help me stop panicking about what needs to get done and start doing. I break things down into smaller chunks to make everything feel more doable and far more manageable.

I take myself outside

Living in Devon means lots of beautiful scenery, and getting away from my desk and outside into the fresh air is one of my go-tos.

Bonus points if I can combine this with no.1!

Post-it notes stuck everywhere.

I stick it everywhere

I'm not joking when I say everywhere too. It's chaotic, but writing out reminders, questions and half-cooked ideas onto post-it notes works for me. Seeing things out of my head and onto the walls helps me to focus.

I have a routine

When I'm feeling anxious, getting up with a structure takes the panic out of it for me. Whether I'm in the office or working from home, knowing what I need to do and where I need to be makes all the difference.

Making margaritas.

I take time off

I'm guilty of sitting in bed at 11pm, laptop still on and brain buzzing, but I always make sure to prioritise downtime too. Whether it's lunch with the kids, an hour on my own, or drinking margaritas with the husband, switching off is so so important.

Running a small business means juggling a million things at once, and it's easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed.

But mental health isn't a luxury, it's essential! So, make sure you're looking after yourself too.
